In her latest series, 80% proof, portrait photographer Stacey Chambers investigates the effects of alcohol addiction on the family unit.
Using 35mm film that has been soaked in vodka, pre-exposure, Chambers relinquishes the outcome of the portraits. Only the exposure of the photographs has been controlled whilst the alcohol consumes and manipulates the film within the camera.
Drawing from personal experiences, combined with the subject matter of both new and family archival imagery, she is able to represent how alcoholism can subtly or obviously affect a family unit. Some photographs are hardly affected, yet others are completely destroyed. The outcome is unknown, much like the daily lives of the families dealing with the addiction.
