Peizhi Zhang

Artist’s Statement

Peizhi Zhang described a photograph as “The way of self-salvation”. In his particular upbringing in China, melancholy and aloneness were not discussed or rejoiced but rather repressed. As a young man, he was trying hard to suppress his sense of self that experienced loneliness and the quality of being in a state of nothingness. In his work he uses desolate landscapes to form a kinship with the land and explore physical solitude and the paucity of connection and closeness to himself.
